Messages and Facetime

An often overlooked couple of features in iPads within schools is the Messages and Facetime app.

Messages


This is an instant messaging type app – you can open this and instant message your colleagues as needed – its faster than email, its instant and you know that they received it. Its a free app and service from Apple.

Many of school iPads share and AppleID for app purchases which means that Messages is not set up correctly initially. lets sort that:

Head to Settings > General > Messages

If the email address you see listed is your own personal email address – then messages is all set up and you can start to use it. If not – turn messages to ‘off’.

Now, from your home screen, open the Messages app, you will see the following screen:

If you already have your own appleID which you use for school (your C2K address) then key it in here. If not, tap ‘Create New account’ and follow the prompts to create a new appleID – use your school email address for this

Thats it!

In use , Open the Messages App:

Just tap the pen icon in the left hand side of the screen, select who you want to message from your address book and type. You can send text or images. You’ll see when it has been read and delivered, plus the message threads.

Its really just like SMS for your staff use – free, easy to use and really helps productivity.

Facetime


This is the in built video conferencing app for iPad (and iPhone and Mac). It uses the front facing camera on the iPad to grab your face. Its a free app and service from Apple.

In schools this is used really well for communication between staff, parent teacher, pupil help and a fantastic way to get experts visit your classroom with this video conferencing facility so easily available.

Simply choose your contacts , tap one and the call will start – you will yourself and the person you called on screen – look at the camera and smile ! Your can favourite anyone you call to get quick and easy call backs to them.

Just ensure that whomever you want to call is added to your address book.

These are very powerful, yet simple apps – think about how they can used to benefit in your classroom and school – there are endless possibilities!
